Odd timing on discovering this, I've been thinking all morning that Americans today don't vote for a candidate but against their opponent. Then I stumble on this,..

It explains a lot of the dis-function in our system.

Super conservative evangelicals, libertarians, tea-baggers, etc hate the old school Republicans so the crazy R candidates like Trump, Carson, Cruz get the votes in the primaries. The last time they voted for Santorum, Gingrich, Backman, Allen West, other crazy-of-the-month candidate, etc until the money took over and finally put Romney in the seat. Then they voted for Romney because they hated Obama.

Same thing on the Dem side, Obama won last time because the left thought he offered something different than the same old party line. This time Sanders is getting that vote. Hillary may still win this time even though most lefties hate her but they hate the R's even more.

The far left and right are both pissed at their party and mostly for the same reason, both are owned by big money but,..  the two-party, hate-the-other-guy-he's-evil system tends to force voters to the party-picked, big-money candidate for the final choice.

Also,...

I can only think of two things that could have caused the dramatic increase in the R voter's hatred of Ds from 2004 to 2014.

1. The constant barrage of "librull's-is-bad" propaganda from Fox News and RW radio.
2. The color of Obama's skin.
