The removal of US sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline is an attempt to push Germany towards confrontation with China.
Or maybe.....
Someone realized that Russia and Germany are pretty close geographically, Russia has gas to sell, Germany needs gas, and it's not really any business of the US to decide how a gas market on the other side of planet should work.
