Four substations attacked in Washington state, leaving thousands without power
In general substations are easy targets. Many are in remote areas with the critical components protected by nothing more than chain-link fence.
I worked for a small utility and years ago we had two bullets take out a $350,000 transformer. The oil leaked out, the transformer overheated and melted down. I think the total repair was near $1 million.
Two shots from a vehicle a couple blocks away, major outage and a million dollar repair.
Also, Transformers are hard to get right now. There's been a major shortage since the early COVID shutdowns.
