Ian Welsh: Remembering the Good Job Market Of the 70s.
I graduated from a small rural mid-west high school in 1978.
Until about 1974 graduates from my school were pretty much guaranteed a job at one of the local casket factories or an auto plant in one of our neighboring towns. These were pretty solid jobs you could raise a family on.
By 1978, there were no new jobs at those companies so my classmates joined the service or just bummed around, mostly settling into crappy jobs or drug/alcohol addiction.
